I hope you've had a fulfilling summer. I hope you've taken the time to smell the roses and to appreciate all the beauty that the beautiful months of spring and summer bring us!! I also hope you were intentional with your time - because as you already know - time flies!!!
I tried to be very intentional but it was not good enough - I still have a long list of things that I really wanted to do this summer - and it never got done - long list of experiences I wanted to experience with my kids, my husband, my friends - heck I have a long list of friends I wanted to connect with , reach out to, call, lunch with...but unfortunately only a small percentage of that list came to happen.
Which brings me to my very important subject for this blog post - are you being INTENTIONAL with your time - are you being WISE with where your days, hours, minutes, seconds are going??? For those who don't know me well enough - Summer months are the busiest months for me - most of my time is spent on the road going from one appointment to the other, one lunch meeting to the next... week-ends are busy with events and if I am not busy working the events, I am busy attending them! All this to say summer months fly by - but this summer I got into the habit of using the time I spent on the road (in beautiful montreal traffic) wisely... I started listening to podcasts... I will make a post about all my favourite podcasts - because I want to encourage you to also get into the habit to listening - you can even do it in the gym - but that's for another post - coming back to this post, I spent my days in the car driving from one appointment to the other listening to one podcast after the other!!!
I must have listened to hundreds of podcasts and it was honestly the best gift I gave myself - because the knowledge I gained while doing my work was incomparable. The funny thing is after hearing so many of the great speakers and messages and interviews you start seeing a common thread between the most successful people - ONE special message which kept coming up over and over and over again. The first time I heard it, second time I'm like oh that's interesting and then I started recognizing it in everyone's message and finally I listened to the message carefully and was amazed at how so many of them were saying the same thing... MINIMIZE THE NOISE!
If you are like me, you would be thinking - ya great - I've heard that before - nothing new... but then when you hear it from so many different people, so many different perspectives you start realizing how important it is to actually do that... you start realizing and recognizing how the noise is impacting your day to day - impacting your productivity - distracting you from your focus - and actually causing a lot of confusion and clutter in your mind refraining you from reaching GREATNESS!!!
WHAT IS NOISE? Simple - anything that will distract you from your focus and make you doubt what your are doing, occupy your mind, confuse you, stir up emotions that otherwise would not be there - A few eg. of noise are: Social Media, Text Messages, Phone Calls, Emails etc... yes even emails are considered noise because it could occupy your time and take you away from actually producing and being productive. Not to say - work emails are not important, but there is no reason to be sitting and working on emails 8 hours a day - allocate an hour in the morning and an hour in the afternoon on emails... so you can carve out time for you to focus on actually doing work!!
I decided to monitor my behaviour over a period and realized that what they were saying about NOISE was so true... I would wake up in the morning ready to start a productive day - when I would get a text message from a friend, then I would get an email from a colleague who wants to go for lunch, then I would get a call from another friend or family, then I would get a messenger text and them a PM on Instagram and next thing you know the first hour of my work-day that is supposed to be most productive - was just hijacked by mediocre things that did nothing to my productivity or get me any closer to GREATNESS ... then of course I got sucked into the social media game and next thing you know it's 11:00 a.m. and I've done nothing - but now for some reason I feel heavy - my mind can't concentrate, it's all over the place, it's lost its focus - I had lost my train of thought, my inspiration and that is how the days slips away ... one text a time - one distraction at a time...
So I have made drastic changes in my behaviour, in my schedule, in the way I use every single min. of the day - and although the last two weeks were not productive - it was an intentional plan to be with my kids before school started... and now as we enter the last quarter of the year - I plan on making it EPIC - I invite you to join me - for the next 90 days - use the first 90 min of your work day to work on the ONE project that you are passionate about - the one project that will bring you to a new playing field, that one project that you WANT to work on but you end up NEVER working on it because of the noise, the distraction and the mundane day to day tasks like checking emails... I will be sharing my tips and tricks in the next few posts on how to organize your days, how to focus and minimize the noise - as well as make your days so efficient that you can actually put your phone and your laptop away at night and on the week ends to focus on the important things in life - like connecting to your loved ones, creating connections with people that you can actually see and touch - and get your head out of the phone and learn to smell the roses !!!
